Trigger setup

Wheel type, polarity, offset, cam, and the composite logger.

If the trigger is wrong, every other table is fiction. Race Core will not “sort of run” on a bad crank signal — it will show nonsense RPM, fire coils at the wrong time, or refuse to enable fuel. Fix this before VE.

Pick the wheel you actually have

Composite logger

Diagnostics → high-speed / composite logger. Crank with fuel and spark off.

  • Crank channel: a regular tooth pattern with one (or two) missing. Gaps equal, teeth equal.
  • VR polarity: a correct missing-tooth usually looks like a single long gap, not a long-low then long-high pair. Swap VR+ / VR− if inverted. On MAX992x-style VR, “use only rising edge” is typically true and invert primary is typically false — then confirm in the log.
  • Cam: one pulse per two crank revolutions for a four-stroke sequential cam. If you see one per rev you have a wasted-spark cam (or a crank sensor on the cam input).
  • RPM in the gauge cluster should be stable and in the cranking ballpark (150–350 rpm). 0 rpm or 12 000 rpm means the decoder is lost.

Trigger offset

Offset is how you make “0° in software” equal TDC in metal. The procedure is older than any particular ECU:

  1. 01Lock timing

    Fixed cranking/idle spark, e.g. 10°. Disable idle control so it cannot hunt.

  2. 02Light on cyl 1

    Timing light on cylinder 1 coil or plug lead. Crank or idle.

  3. 03Move offset

    Change trigger offset until the damper mark agrees with 10°. Direction depends on the wheel; if the light reads 20° when you command 10°, you need 10° more offset (or less — the logger plus one experiment will tell you).

  4. 04Recheck at 3 000 rpm

    If timing walks with RPM, you have a VR polarity, missing-tooth, or delayed Hall problem, not an offset problem.
